In the stationery DM,the area of fountion pen are always catch my eyes,and recently I use the old fountion pen which I found at home to correct my wrong writing posture.Fountain pen were common use when the general pen didn’t show up at about 20 to 30 years ago in Taiwan,my parents writing with fountain pen in their young ages.Why fountain pen user decline?Because general pen have lower price and stronger adaptability.
Fountain pen’s nib have four common size, EF(extra fine),F(fine),M(medium),and B(broad), and there are also various special nib size you can find . When using the fountion pen, you need to write with certain angle,or you might hurt the nib. The nib of Japanese fountain pen system is finer than European’s,therefore writing Chinese word with Japanese fountain pen system is a good choice.But if you like to write English word or big letter, European system is suitable for you.
General pen is available to almost every paper we use in our dailies,and waterproof,but the fountain pen doesn’t.Besides,the maintenance of fountain pen is more complicated than general pen.The advantageof using fountain pen is that you can refill ink, a bottle of ink can be uesd for a long time, and the ink written by fountain pen have more color changes(sheen and shading).
Nowadays,the fountain pen’s brand we can see in the stores easily in Taiwan are Pilot(Japan),Platinum(Japan),Schneider(Germany),they have some affordable fountain pen which the prices are under or around NT500 dollars. The other brands are Lamy(Germany),Parker(U.S.),Cross(U.S.),Pelikan(Germany),Montblanc(Germany) and etc.Daiso sells the cheapest fountain pen,you can cost NT39 to buy one.The fountain pen of Daiso are made by the Japan’s famous stationaty brand Sailor and Platinum,but those fountain pen are hard to see in Taiwan.
Taiwan have some fountain pen factories that did the OEM of Japan’s or European brands for decades of years,and now they do their own brands,for example,TWSBI(三文堂). TWSBI did the OEM for 40 plus years,and now has it’s popular fountain pen series .TWSBI ‘s 580al series has a nickname called “the king of pen in Taiwan”. Everytime 580al just put one color on the market and the quantity is limited, TWSBI’s fountain pen have good quality and the color are beautiful,580al series sold out quickly in few days.Some peple want to collect 580al clan(陽極戰隊), they have no hesitate to spend more expensive price to but a new member of 580al,so there are many profiteers whom buy at official price(NT1800) and sell out higher.
When it comes to “Limited Goods”,I think the Japanese brand Sailor is a leader. Sailor is one of the common fountain pen brands of Japan,however Sailor have no agency in Taiwan.Therefore the sources of Sailor’s good is instability,and Sailor have lots of “area restricted”and jointly goods, including fountain pen and ink.For instance, Gunma ink(群馬限定墨),Pokemon(寶可夢(神奇寶貝))fountain pen.Sailor also make specific ink of some famous Japanese stores,such as Kingdom Note(famous Japanese pen store)’s biological ink(生物墨水).Because too many Sailor’s commodities cann’t be bought in Taiwan,there are rare,so that there have a business. Limited Goods has its magic,maybe you already a similar color,sometimes you still want to buy the limited one.These days,Sailor put out just 500 pieces of new fountain pen about Taiwan, and each of the pen has exclusive number, they are hot ,especially the pen which has luchy number such as 8.
Doesn’t Taiwan have our own fountain pen component producer?Yes, it does, Taiwan have several brands product components for fountain pen and the pen itself,but we seldom see them in the typical stores.You can buy some of these Taiwanese brands in certain fountain pen’s shop,or just buy at the official website
through the Net. ”Hero”,a brand from China,have some copy products of German’s Lamy and the other international brands .Price of Hero’s product is low,and so do others Chinese brands(e.g.the ink of Penbbs),they are popular in Taiwan,too.These Chinese brands are the competitor of other countries ,Taiwan’s brands are without exception.
In order to the pleasure of writing with fountain pen,more and more people are willing to writing.In my opinion,the user of fountain pen is increasing in Taiwan these years,there has a trend,no matter you writing or just for collection.Taiwanese brands need more effort on propaganda,perhaps the appearance of pen need to have more diversification.too. United pen’s writing test, I think is a good activity.Cooperate with famous person, events and attractions is also feasible.Of course,everyone has its own choice,and we can’t say that cheap brand must have bad quality.Although free or cheap things are popular in Taiwanese society,and the concept of "Intellectual Property Rights”grows slowly, I think the reputation of brand is important,copy isn’t a good behavior.I am looking forward to have more options of Taiwanese brand and more friends in the fountain pen’s world.
